How Arcadia Power is Changing the way that America Consumes Energy

Clean energy made simple. That is what Arcadia Power is all about. Their mission is to change the way that America consumes energy by being the first company to give consumers a choice to use clean energy. We had the opportunity to hear from CEO and co-founder of Arcadia Power, Kiran Bhatraju about how this company came to be and how they are giving customers an option of where their energy is sourced.

TechDay: What was the inspiration for Arcadia Power/how did you get involved?

Kiran Bhatraju: “We founded the company because while the solar industry is booming, only a tiny number of people can actually put solar panels on their roof. After working in the utility industry, we realized utilities provide customers with zero choices, and we saw the various ways large companies would access renewables through purchasing on the power grid. We wanted to give utility customers a choice, and provide them access to the same renewable energy markets in a simple and seamless way.”

T: Describe what Arcadia Power does in one sentence:

K: “We give everyone in the US access to national renewable energy markets right through their monthly utility bill.”

T: Why do you think you were the first nationwide renewable energy company?

K: “We're the first company to offer anyone in the country access to the same renewable energy markets that Google, Apple, and Whole Foods use to buy clean, pollution-free electricity. And we're the first to do it all through the customer's monthly utility bill. For too long, only large corporations and institutions had access to utility-scale wind energy and Arcadia Power has made the purchase of renewable energy simple and easy for anyone that lives in an apt and can't access rooftop solar panels.”

T: What did you feel like on the best day of your company's existence and why?

K: “Everyday we're operating is a great day because I love knowing that our company is making a difference and supporting clean energy jobs in the US.”

T: What is your differentiator?

K: “The utility customer relationship is broken, and most power bills are too confusing to understand. For too long energy customers (read: all of us) have been left with monopolies that don't provide us any choices on where our energy comes from. We're looking to redefine that relationship, give customers actionable insight into their energy use, and give them an option of where their energy is sourced.”

T: What’s the level of growth you’d be satisfied seeing in the next year?

K: “Our team measures growth through impact in the renewable energy markets, and customer happiness. Our customers love knowing which wind farms they're supporting, and they love telling their neighbors about the commitment they're making. We're working hard to bring our customers new, innovative products and savings in 2016.”

T: Anything else you want to add?

K: “Producing conventional electricity for the average household in the U.S. each year requires burning 8,079 pounds of coal, and using over 5,000 gallons of water. You can bring those numbers to zero by choosing wind power.”

Arcadia Power is putting the power back in the consumer’s hands and thus, promoting a community dedicated to conservation and sustainability.

Special thanks to Arcadia Power CEO and co-founder, Kiran Bhatraju.
