Why Los Angeles Tech?

With tremendous support from LA’s Mayor, Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles’ local startups feel confident about the growth of their community and its economic impact. There’s a healthy and active local investor community, making LA enticing even for out of town startups considering a sunny temperate move. As the second largest city in the nation, the amount of potential the city hosts is boundless.

With Hollywood at the core, there’s no question whether LA folks know how to market. If there’s any force known to take advantage of the great megaphone that is media, it’s Hollywood  A startup founder just has to get their product in the right hands of a powerful figure and then - poof - they’re an instant success.

Many large well established tech companies such as Hulu, eHarmony, Maker Studios, LegalZoom, ShoeDazzle, OnDemand are setting up shop in LA because the tech talent pool exists, and is in fact growing. USC, UCLA and CalTech are filled with eager and engaged technically trained talent and a wealthy student body to boot. These young folks are fueling innovation on campus and are the new hires at the various local startups. With big tech companies moving to LA, this means collaboration and acquisition potential for the local startups.

However the greatest frustration in LA startup lies is the fact that the city is so spread out and seemingly fragmented. Due to bad traffic, a geographically widespread city, it leaves little chance for serendipitous run ins. That’s exactly where TechDay comes into play.
