Revolutionary versus Evolutionary - Why Aren't We Better?
Every startup has about a 3 in 10 chance in succeeding. With odds like those, why are so many startups creating the same product? Why aren’t they creating something truly unique to maximize their potential to succeed? Some new products start with an idea for new tech- and then the product is created around it. Some ideas for new products come from experiences. Others are developed to solve a specific problem. Any of these methods can create an evolutionary product. Evolutionary products are new ways to utilize and update current products. A revolutionary product comes from a radical change in way of life- through solving a problem that goes beyond what already exists. To me, revolutionary products should be the 3 of 10 succeeding.
So is the startup brain focused on the wrong concept? The wrong future? Is it truly possible to create change within the startup sphere to emphasize the success of revolutionary products?
Between the realms of evolutionary and revolutionary products- there is the distinction between solving problems we currently have- and eliminating them for future generations. What concerns me is that there are more and more products being created that are half baked evolutionary products. Enhancing what already exists and saturating a market that is already filled to the brim with options and products isn’t creating much change. What our startups, founders, students, and innovators need to focus on are the revolutionary products. These people will create products that are life-changing. Change requires time and adjustment, and the best startups recognize that it takes risks to create something worth the risk.
I get that it’s pretty cool that I can share my thoughts, photos, and ideas with other people via the internet and its various outlets. But what would be really cool? Being able to share my entire genome map with my doctor, family, or kids. There are advances being made in genetics and technology that have the potential to completely change human life. This technology will create revolutionary products that have the ability to alter the genetic code of the human race- and beyond. There are monumental changes that we need to start making now, and the scope is limitless. It should be our goal to focus on being legendary- creating revolutionary products that will make the first steps towards creating a better future for us on every level
I challenge founders and innovators to be nothing less than revolutionary. It’s 2015 already- and we should be working towards eliminating the same problems people have dealt with for centuries. Instead of complaining of life not being like The Jetson’s or Back to the Future, why don’t we start to do our research and create a better future. Think of what you dream of changing-- and work for it. Be revolutionary.
