A Chat with Founder of Krossover, Vasu Kulkarni

My basketball team in high school was good. Actually, we were really good. We had great team chemistry, we had some great athletes and we had a ton of fun. Towards the end of our season during our junior year, we became sluggish. We weren’t learning from our mistakes. It seemed that we simply weren’t as good as we had thought. This led to us losing in the semifinals to a team that we had played earlier in the season and won. We lost this time because of avoidable mistakes. We should have changed up our defensive style or we should have taken advantage of our size. But we didn’t do any of those things, because we didn’t know we should. We didn’t have an analysis of our previous games. There was no way for us to actually see the mistakes we had made in the past. This is where Krossover comes in.

Krossover analyzes game tape for thousand of teams across the country. With a staff that is filled with sports and technology fanatics, Krossover aims to help athletes, coaches and fans across a variety of levels and sports. Their incredibly passionate staff allows them to bring smart and affordable solutions to all teams.

I had the opportunity to hear from founder of Krossover, Vasu Kulkarni, about his goals, fears, and competitors for the company.

TechDay: Was there ever a time when you thought that the business would fail?

Vasu Kulkarni:  “Of course. Several times, and as a founder, you worry about that every single day. The markets could change, competition could enter, something catastrophic could happen to our servers, etc. On the same token, markets could change, competition could die, and we could end up owning a massive market. It works both ways. I think the key take away is that there is never a time as a startup when you get a peaceful night’s sleep.”

T: What did you feel like on the best day of your company's existence and why?

V: “There really isn’t one moment I can remember. It’s really all just a blur at this point. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years, or that we’re 80 people now. Holiday parties are always fun though. Gives you a moment to step back, smell the roses, and take it all in for a moment, before the madness begins again.”

T: What’s your differentiator?

V: "While our product truly has a value proposition that no other on the market has, I like to think that it’s the passion of the 80 sports nuts on our team that is the difference maker. Our customers get on the phone with us and instantly know that we are sports guys / gals, and that energy is what turns them into loyal customers for life.”

T: What’s the level of growth you’d be satisfied seeing in the next year?

V: There’s an old silicon valley joke - best to always stay pre-revenue, because no amount of revenue will ever be enough. But between us girls, I wouldn’t be sad if we continued to hit the 100%+ growth that we’ve had for the past few years.”
