Level the Playing Field: Why Representation Matters for Diversity
Andy Saldaña is the Executive Director of NY Tech Alliance, a non-profit organization that runs the largest Meetup group in the world, the NY Tech Meetup (NYTM). With over 61,000 members and a mission to build a more sustainable and diverse technology industry for all New Yorkers, the organization sits at the center of the NY Tech ecosystem. He is also a co-founder of QueerTech, a non-profit based in Montreal, focusing on empowering, connecting, and increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and technologists.
Representation is critical to leveling the entrepreneurship playing field and paramount in increasing the diversity of the tech ecosystem. As affinity groups get stronger and gain more strongholds within larger networks, so do the pathways and opportunities for at-risk youth, queer techies, and women, among others. It also affords greater access to education for young and new entrepreneurs and increases ways to connect individuals to a more extensive network of resources. Any ecosystem is only as healthy and vibrant as all of its members, and the key to its maximum strength is diversity.
